Low cost, good quality hex-copter solutions can now be made for around $500 for DIY RC / aerial photography enthusiasts:

$49 > ICE-MAN Controller  and Gyro (from bluelight-tech.com)
$120 > 6 x brushless motors (1000 Kv)
$120 > 6 x ESC units (30A)
$160 > Frame with 25cm arms and landing legs (from Quadframe.com)
$60 > 1 x LiPo battery (3 cell, 11.1v, 2250 mAH, 65C)
$10 > 6 x Props, 10/6 inch 2 or 3 blade props

So around US$520, or if you include the RC and camera equipment:

$200 > Futaba low cost RC Tx / Rx (T6EX)
$80 > GoPro camera mount (from aeroxcraft.com)
$280> GoPro Hero 2 camera

An additional $560 or thereabouts. This gives you a basic stable hex-copter with “wet” weight of around 1.9 Kg and flight time around 15 to 20 mins. Ready to go for all sorts of aerial shots. The controller can then be upgraded for a full loiter / GPS  / FPV / AHRS etc. system later on.
